Under Cabinet Wine Racks

Picks by Alper Billik, Advanced Sommelier. Each pick says whether it was handled or assessed from its listing.

See the 7 picks

An under cabinet wine rack turns the dead space between the wall cabinets and the counter into a small bar: bottles on their side, glasses hanging below, nothing taking up the counter itself.

Height decides what it is for. Warm air rises, so a rack hung under the wall cabinets sits in the warmest air of the kitchen. That is fine for the bottles you will open this week. Anything you are keeping belongs low: inside a base cabinet or the bay under an island, closed in and away from the oven, dishwasher and fridge.

So the picks come in two groups: racks that hang under the cabinets, and racks that go under the counter, inside a base cabinet.

Hangs under the cabinets

For this week's bottles. Check what is above before you drill: a cabinet floor is often thin, and a full six-bottle rack is about 16 lb of wine.

Wallniture Piccola Under Cabinet Rack, 6 bottles

$

6 bottles, plus a glass railBlack metal

Assessed from specification

A black metal shelf that screws to the underside of a wall cabinet, about 22 inches wide and 7 deep, holding six bottles on their side with a rail below for stemmed glasses. It turns the dead space above a counter into a small bar, which is what most buyers want it for. Reviewers say larger bottles and Champagne do not fit, and one warns the screws can come through a thin cabinet floor, so check its thickness first. It hangs high, in the warmest air of the kitchen: keep this week's bottles here, not the ones you are saving.

Not for: Bottles you are keeping. It hangs high in the kitchen, where the air is warmest, and it will not take Champagne.

Wallniture Dijon Bottle Rack, 5 bottles

$

5 bottlesBlack steel

Assessed from specification

Five bottles in a slim steel rack about 23 inches long and under 6 wide, which mounts flat under a cabinet or on a wall. It ships with metal anchors and a small level, more thought than most racks this size get. Reviewers find it sturdy and easy to fit; the catch is short bottles, which some say can slip out, and one reviewer found it loose even when level. Standard 750ml bottles suit it best.

Not for: Short or squat bottles, which reviewers say can slide out. And, like any rack fixed high, bottles you plan to keep.

Joseph Joseph Cradle Folding Rack, 4 bottles

$

4 bottlesStainless steel and plastic

Assessed from specification

Four bottles in a cradle that folds flat against the underside of the cabinet when it is empty, held shut by magnets, so it disappears until you need it. Joseph Joseph is a known kitchenware maker, and the screws come in the box. It is the newest pick here, with only a handful of reviews, so there is less evidence on how it holds up. Four bottles, hung high: the ones you are opening this week.

Not for: More than four bottles, or anyone who wants a long track record before buying. Reviews are still few.

MOCOUM Under Cabinet Bottle Racks, 2‑pack

$

6 bottles across two racksIron

Assessed from specification

Two small iron racks, three bottles each, that screw under a cabinet or onto a wall, or simply sit on a counter, for less than the price of a decent bottle. It is the cheapest way to find out whether under-cabinet storage suits your kitchen. Reviewers are mixed on the quality, and several report that the supplied screws do not line up with the bracket holes, so have your own screws ready.

Not for: Anyone who wants it to look built in. Reviewers call it fair for the price, not more.

Under the counter

Low and closed in, the best place in a kitchen to keep wine. Measure the depth first: behind a door, a standard bottle needs at least 13 inches lying flat.

American Pro Décor Solid Alder Lattice Insert, 14 bottles

$$

14 bottlesSolid alder, unfinished

Assessed from specification

Not a rack you hang but a solid alder lattice panel, 17 by 36 inches, that you cut down to fit a base cabinet, the open bay under a kitchen island, or the slope under a staircase. The diamond openings are about 4 inches, wide enough for Champagne and Burgundy as well as Bordeaux. It is a woodworking job: the maker recommends a band saw, and the wood arrives unfinished. Built in low and closed in, it is storage for the bottles you are saving, not just a display.

Not for: Anyone without a saw or a free afternoon. It arrives as a panel, not a finished rack.

Gusto Nostro Countertop Wine Rack, 14 bottles

$

14 bottles, 3 wide slots on topPowder-coated black iron

Assessed from specification

Fourteen bottles in a geometric black iron frame about 17 inches wide, 12 tall and 5.5 deep. What sets it apart is the top row: eleven slots are for standard bottles and three are wider, and reviewers confirm those take Champagne. It arrives ready to use and is shallow enough to slide into a cabinet as an insert. For a mixed collection on a counter, this is the one to buy.

Not for: Keeping more than three sparkling bottles at once. Only the top three slots are wide.

Oceanstar Bamboo Wine Rack, 12 bottles

$

12 bottlesBamboo, espresso finish

Assessed from specification

Twelve bottles in a bamboo frame about 16 inches tall, 12 wide and under 6 deep. Reviewers fit it on a shelf inside low kitchen cabinets, which is where it does its best work: dark and out of the way. It is the cheapest rack here and looks it, and reviews are split on how solid it feels once it is full. For a dozen bottles you will drink over the next few months, that is a fair trade.

Not for: A rack on show, or one that gets knocked. Some reviewers find it loose when loaded, and the listing gives no slot width, so do not count on wide bottles.

Where in the kitchen, and where never

Low and on an interior wall beats high and on an outside wall. Keep racks away from the oven, the hob and the dishwasher, which vents hot, humid air for an hour at a time.

Never above the fridge. A fridge gives off heat all day, so the cabinet above it is one of the warmest spots in the kitchen, and it is high up, where the air is already warmest.

Common mistakes with under cabinet wine racks

  • Keeping the good bottles in the hanging rack. It sits in the warmest air in the kitchen; move anything you are saving to a low cabinet.
  • Drilling into a thin cabinet floor with the supplied screws. Check the thickness, and use screws short enough not to come through into the cabinet.
  • Fitting a rack in the cabinet above the fridge or beside the dishwasher. Both run warm for hours, and the wine pays for it.
